Interview with the Mother about the Return of Sri Aurobindo


At the beginning of May 1952, during one of my visits to the Ashram from Bombay, I met the Mother in her room at the Playground. It was on the eve of my departure. What she had said at the end of 1950 about Sri Aurobindo coming back in a supramental body had been in my mind pretty often in the period after it, acutely missing him as I had done—missing him not only as a most compassionate and illuminating Guru but also as a most delightfully enlightening critic of literature and a correspondent most patient, understanding, intimate and voluminous. So, just before taking my leave, I expressed my hope to have Sri Aurobindo back with us in the future. I spoke too of my concern over world-factors threatening the Divine’s work. The Mother, with great sympathy and kindness in her eyes but with a quiet steady voice, replied:
“The return of Sri Aurobindo very soon is not likely. His going was connected with world-conditions. If world-conditions had been such as could so soon change and be suitable for his presence amongst us, his going itself would have been unnecessary.
“Also, the return cannot be in a startling miraculous manner. That would not be consistent with Sri Aurobindo’s method and our work. A more probable way of return would be: the present occasional visions of Sri Aurobindo which some people see—the almost material appearance he makes now to some people at certain times—may increase; the manifestation may be more frequent and more general, until one day a permanent reappearance takes place.
“One can’t fix the precise time of his return. It may even be five hundred years later. I can’t say anything, since the knowledge has not come to me. I only say things when I get them. This much I have said: Sri Aurobindo will be the first to have the supramental body.
“People keep asking me: ‘When Sri Aurobindo comes back in a supramental body, will he need to eat or drink or do other usual things?’ All these questions are silly.
“Sri Aurobindo’s leaving the body makes no essential difference. Sri Aurobindo is after all a certain consciousness, the divine consciousness, and this consciousness was there even before the earth came. The question of his ‘absence’ has little meaning.
“A world war may destroy civilisation, but it won’t destroy the Divine’s work. Sri Aurobindo once told me that he had so arranged things that nothing would interfere with his work.”

Meeting of the Pope [Paul VI] with the Mother (Vision)


                           

I had a visit from the Pope! The Pope [Paul VI] had come to Pondicherry (he does intend to visit India), he had come to Pondicherry and asked to see me (quite impossible things materially, of course, but they were perfectly simple and straightforward). So I saw him. He came, we met each other over there (in the music room), and we actually did speak to each other. I really felt the man in front of me (gesture of feeling),felt what he was. And he was very worried at the thought of what I was going to say to people about his visit: the revelation I would give of his visit. I saw that, but I didn't say anything. Finally he said (we were speaking in French, he had an Italian accent; but all this, you see, doesn't correspond to any thought: it's like pictures in a film), he said, "What will you tell people about my visit?" So I looked at him (inner contacts are more concrete than pictures or words) and I simply answered him, after staring at him intently, "I will tell them that we have been in communion in our love for the Lord...." And there was in it the warmth of a golden light - extraordinary! Then I saw something relax in him, as if an anxiety were leaving him, and he left like that, in a great concentration.

And what I experienced was the unreality of those things, as if we were trapped in an unreal falsehood, and everything vanishes when we get out of it... it doesn't exist, it isn’t! That’s what is frightening! That all those things which are so real, so concrete, so frightening for us do not exist. That, we are simply trapped in a falsehood.
“Who are we? Why? How? What? Never, ever, not once in all its life, had this body felt such total and profound pain as it did that day, oh! Then, at the end of it, bliss. And everything vanished. As if all that, all those awful things, didn't exist. And all the methods, which could be termed artificial, including Nirvana, all the methods for escaping are worthless.”

Luminous Preservation of Sri Aurobindo’s Body


(Though Sri Aurobindo withdrew from his physical body on December 5, 1950, the body did not show any signs of decomposition till four days later. The body was aglow with a special light which the Mother confirmed as being the light of the Supramental.)
Regarding the preservation of Sri Aurobindo’s body for several days after his withdrawal: You are right; the mere fact of preservation does not give special significance to the event. What was unique and important about the phenomenon was the presence for so many days of the Supramental Light in the body. It was the first time that the said Light was seen by many physical eyes, illumining a physical form. It was an irrefutable testimony to the fact of the great Light having concretely descended on the earth plane and found a material habitation, for however short a period. Preservation of the body by yogic means is not very uncommon. There are scores of instances of Hathayogins withdrawing their life-breath, leaving their bodies intact for days together. There are certain currents of life-force called sub-pranas in the Indian system  which keep the body without disintegration even when the main life-breath has ceased. One need not be a yogi or a spiritual man or a saint for that. Persons who are used to pranayama in one form or another can have this effected in their systems.
The greatness of saints is always their own. It is not conferred on them by the beliefs or superstitions of the devotees.

Where music and spirituality meet, with Anie Nunnally


In the summer of 2011 I had the pleasure of participating in the AUM Conference in Lodi, CA. The Conference gathered  many spiritually oriented people who receive inspiration and guidance from the teachings of  Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. For 3 days we all joined in to hear insightful lectures, participate in meditations and workshops, and receive offerings of poems and music.
During the Conference I met Anie Nunnally, President of Sri Aurobindo Center of Los Angeles and accomplished singer.  As we got to know each other I became  extremely curious about Anie’s connection with music and about her spiritual path. Some months later I had the chance to  sing at the beautiful Center in Los Angeles and I asked her to share with us some of her experiences and perspectives on music and spirituality.
Anie’s inclination toward music and spirituality started early in life. Initiated in music by her mother, an accomplished piano player, Anie started to sing at an early age and by the time she was two and a half years old  she was able to sing thirty songs.
At fourteen Anie had her first spiritual awakening through music.:
” I remember one of the first times that I was listening to a piece of classical music when I was about 14  (by this time I was in boarding school and singing in the choir and performing in school musicals) this was when I had the experience of an awakening in the center of my chest.  Something inside me soared upwards with the music and it was asensation that I had never experienced before. It was like a bird had flown out of the center of my being . It was, of course, an awakening in my psychic being ( The Soul center within humans) to the beauty of the music. So music had become my way to inner openings and a sense of the higher vital had been experienced.”
An unusual teenager, Anie Nunnally was classically oriented and developed a successful career in music. She toured for 14 months with Florence Henderson in ‘The Sound of Music’ through United States and Canada in the 60s.
Years later Anie found, in the teachings of Sri Aurobindo & The Mother, her spiritual path. After a successful career in music, she saw herself becoming more and more involved with her inner life through the practice of Integral Yoga. Her husband to be Richard (Narad Eggenberger) was the one who introduced her to this path which ended up taking her to live in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram  close to the spiritual leader Mother Mirra (known as The Mother):
“After a serious auto accident in 1962 Dec. I had a profound experience of the Mother who had brought me back from the portals of death. I had a concussion and went into shock. Head injuries required 30 stitches.  This led to many spiritual experiences and letters to the Mother for guidance on my path. My experience with her (which opened all my chakras, and everything in my centers of energy within, started to spin like wheels)  From that moment I knew that I wanted to live in the ashram and around her Presence and so by Aug. 1969 I was living in the ashram and spent 3 1/2 years there with Her.”
Music and spirituality are intimately intertwined in Anie’s life. As I got in touch with her history I felt curious to hear her perspective on the the relationship between musical and spiritual experiences:
In the Mother’s teachings Anie found guidance to the cultivation of inner life and spiritual growth. She says: “Without music and the Mother having opened my psychic being, and my deep love for music, I may not have chosen my current spiritual path.”
“They are similar in that both can lead to an opening to the gateways and pathways to the Psychic Being – the Soul Center within man that is the individual Spark of the Divine. However, just as there are numerous levels of consciousness (from the darkest to the highest heights) so it is with music. Not all music can lead us to the highest heights. So, it depends upon what type of music one listens to. If music is on a lower level or just ordinary, mundane music it can either conjure up very bad vibrations or keep one on a lower level of consciousness in the lower vital nature. However, beautiful art, poetry and some music of a high quality can take us immediately to higher realms.”
One song that, in Anie’s opinion, carries these higher qualities is the Brazilian song Manhã de Carnaval ( A Day in the life of a Fool). This music, composed by Luiz Bonfá and Antônio Maria, was part of the soundtrack of Black Orpheus, the Oscar winning film responsible for promoting Bossa Nova beyond Brazil at the end of the 50s:
” There is a haunting sense of timelessness to this beautiful song. When I hear it or play it on the piano it touches my heart deeply and conjures up so many of higher human emotions. This music enters deeply into the soul.”

Spirituality





“… the old spirituality was an escape from life into the divine Reality, leaving the world just where it was, as it was; whereas our new vision, on the contrary, is a divinisation of life, a transformation of the material world into a divine world. This has been said, repeated, more or less understood, indeed it is the basic idea of what we want to do. But this could be a continuation with an improvement, a widening of the old world as it was
  and so long as this is a conception up there in the field of thought, in fact it is hardly more than that  but what has happened, the really new thing, is that a new world is born, born, born. It is not the old one transforming itself, it is a new world, which is born. And we are right in the midst of this period of transition where the two are entangled  where the outer still persists all-powerful and entirely dominating the ordinary consciousness, but where the new one is quietly slipping in, still very modest, unnoticed  unnoticed to the extent that outwardly it does not disturb anything very much, for the time being, and that in the consciousness of most people it is even altogether imperceptible. And yet it is working, growing  until it is strong enough to assert itself visibly.”

A Rare Interview of Sri Aurobindo


(This is a rare interview of Sri Aurobindo which he gave to a correspondent of the Empire, a Calcutta-based daily journal, on 15 August 1908. The interview took place in the Alipore Magistrate’s Court on the date of Sri Aurobindo’s thirty-sixth birthday. The spellings have been kept intact.)

Ever since the commencement of the trial until Saturday Arabindo [Sri Aurobindo] has preserved a stolid lethargic demeanour.
From the first day’s hearing to the thirty-sixth, he has occupied one bench, his eyes immovably fixed on the floor, totally indifferent to the unfolding issues of the case.
The Arabindo of Saturday was, however, quite another being. His personality, hitherto grave and prepossessed, had been metamorphosised into one of sprightliness and sunniness. The cause of all this jollification, as Arabindo explained, was to a certain extent remarkable. “In the first place,” he explained, “today is my birthday; and we are celebrating it as best we can under the circumstances. I was born on the 15th August 1872, and on that anniversary in 1906 the National College opened its doors to teach among other things, the principles of Swadeshism. It was either the day before or the day after my birthday, 1907,” he continued waxing warm with the subject “that I was arrested in connection with the first ‘Bande Mataram’ sedition case. And more remarkable still my birthday is round again today and the Magistrate has given a definite assurance that he will commit on the evidence given in this, a case not of sedition but revolution.
“Besides all this my brother Birendro [Barindra Kumar Ghose] is threatened on my birthday to be charged with abetment of murder in the Mozufferpore affair, besides having to stand his trial for conspiracy. These are what I call a remarkable string of coincidences,” he added with a smile.
“Are we getting tired of this protracted trial you ask? Well, to be candid we are, although we don’t mind it in the least. As a matter of fact it is useless pumping witnesses about my supposed editorship of the ‘Bande Mataram.’ I certainly have edited the ‘Bande Mataram,’ but this only I did on different occasions when Bepin Babu [Bepin Chandra Pal] first edited it, and I will state now once and for all I never, never did occupy its editorial chair. I must also deny that I fathered the many brilliant leaders that have appeared in that paper. I certainly did write some of them, but I cannot claim the authorship of the best of them. I wish I could,” he added with a twinkle.
Arabindo’s facetious parting shot to the “frequenter” was: “You can add to those coincidences the fact that I shall be very probably coming back from the Andamans on my birthday next year.”
