Kali - Dread Goddess of Life and Death

Courtesy : "FATE" (Magazine), March 1950, Clark Publishing Company, Illinois

Kali, the fearful and ferocious form of the mother goddess, is seen in her violent mood, standing with one foot on her consort Lord Shiva's chest, with her tongue stuck out. She has been depicted during one of her battles with the evil forces. In the battle Kali was so much involved in the killing spree that she got carried away and began destroying everything in sight. To stop her, Lord Shiva threw himself under her feet. It is assumed that Shiva is the silent aspect of the Transcendental Reality, and Kali is the dynamic aspect of the Transcendental Reality. Truth is complete when the dynamic aspect and the silent aspect function together.

It's a westerner's perception of Hindu gods in the superficial aspect. To understand Kali one must read Sri Aurobindo's book The Mother. Tantra & Shakti cult are not limited to external worship or animal sacrifice. Swami Vivekanand's disciple Bhagni Nibedita's book on godess Kali is worth reading.
